You Don't Have to Be the Best to Be YOUR Best

Special runs can happen anywhere, not just in Boston.  This was the finish of one of the best races of my life, and it happened in my own backyard!

Runners are a competitive bunch.  Whether we're racing to beat the clock or to beat the runner right next to us, we seem to always be striving for something more.  This is a good thing, except when it isn't.  For many, the last couple of weeks has brought the good news that the Boston Marathon has a spot open for them.  For others, the news was more disappointing.  Even though many achieved a qualifying time, the popularity of the race is such that it's not enough to just qualify.  You have to qualify with a cushion.

For so many runners, the social media announcements of Boston acceptance has felt like salt in a wound.  Qualifying standards may seem forever out of reach.

I've run Boston 5 times, and it was great every time.  It's a special race.  But it's not special because the course is unique.  It's special because of the hard work it took to get there.  Since that's my measuring stick, any race can be special.  Don't let Boston get you down.  Take pride in where you are at.  Take pride in what you do.  Take pride in what you overcome to be your best self.  A great race can happen anywhere.  You don't have to be the best to be YOUR best.
